As the most popular of all the North Lakes destinations, Keswick has been a thriving market town since 1276. Today there is still a lively market every Saturday, which takes place along the main streets.

Keswick town itself is charming and picturesque and has a pedestrian area to encourage you to leave the car behind and enjoy the great outdoors. Breathe in the fresh air, take a walk along cobbled streets lined with enchanting shops, galleries, museums, a tiny cinema and as you would expect, a number of walking and climbing equipment shops – perfect if you’ve forgotten something you need.

From here, you’re perfectly positioned go off and explore the wonderful areas of the North Lakes including Windermere, Rydal, Grasmere, Thirlmere and Derwentwater. You can walk right into the middle of the Lake District either on foot or if you want to reserve a little energy, you can catch the local bus.

What’s more, if it’s spectacular scenery you’re looking for, head towards Helvellyn and the glacial valley of St John’s in the Vale for stunning mountain vistas. Or if you’re looking for something a little more sedate, take a boat trip out across Derwentwater.
